Crime and Punishment It is a Psychological Novel by the Famous Russian Author Foydor Dostoevsk

Yes, I like ceilings, and the high better than the low. In literature I think there are low-ceiling masterpieces— Crime and Punishment , for instance—and high-ceiling masterpieces, Remembrance of Things Past. No one doubts that Crime and Punishment has a prominent place in the pantheon of world literature. Its place in the literary canon is secure. Nonetheless, the question remains: How great is Crime and Punishment? Nothing more than a finely crafted crime story?

Crime and Punishment PDF Summary

Alienation is the primary theme of Crime and Punishment. He sees himself as superior to all other people and so cannot relate to anyone. Within his personal philosophy, he sees other people as tools and uses them for his own ends. After committing the murders, his isolation grows because of his intense guilt and the half-delirium into which his guilt throws him. Over and over again, Raskolnikov pushes away the people who are trying to help him, including Sonya, Dunya, Pulcheria Alexandrovna, Razumikhin, and even Porfiry Petrovich, and then suffers the consequences. In the end, he finds the total alienation that he has brought upon himself intolerable. Only in the Epilogue, when he finally realizes that he loves Sonya, does Raskolnikov break through the wall of pride and self-centeredness that has separated him from society.

Sara Pisak , Opinion Editor April 4, Who does not love interconnected character plots and characters with classic Russian, hard to pronounce, similar names? Although I love all of those aspects of Crime and Punishment, what I love about this text is the complex plot structure and surviving themes. Crime and Punishment tackles subjects such as alienation, poverty and nihilism. However, the theme I hear discussed most often and the theme I view as most prolific in the text is the psychological study of crime and punishment. Dostoevsky is known for producing great psychological works which are undercut by social, religious and political issues and institutions.

Yet we know little of Raskolnikov outside of this context. How, for instance, does Raskolnikov come to develop those beliefs and characteristics that impel him to commit his crime? We know only that he embodies these beliefs and characteristics from the outset of the novel. In order to fully comprehend the whys and hows of Raskolnikov as a character, then, we must examine him outside the framework of this novel. But how, we might ask, are we to move beyond the narrative context in which Raskolnikov exists?

A socio-psychological exploration of Dostoyevsky’s crime and punishment

My mother was a temperamental personality. One day she would smother me with kisses and hugs, and the next day she would assail me with utter condemnation. As I slowly grew conscious of her bipolar and explosive persona, I started feeling the need to conceal it from the public. I remember feeling humiliated whenever her temperament would become the center of attention outside my immediate family.

There are some authors that will always stay legends in the literary world. My problem with this kind of introduction of the book is that it makes it sound like a thriller, or crime novel when it is, in fact, a complicated study of human emotions and psyche. We recommend it to all lovers of psychological novels and to those that enjoy Russian classics. Fyodor M.

In the nineteenth century, the western world moved away from the romanticism found in the works of Pushkin in Russia, Goethe in Germany, Hawthorne and Poe in America, and Wordsworth in England and moved in toward a modern realistic approach to literature.
