Das, Biman, and Navin Tejpal. Tugboat shipbuilding activities and costs were studied with a view to deal with the ship design and development problems and to suggest possible solutions. The lack of communication among shipyard design engineers, vendors, regulatory authority personnel, and shipyard construction department managers at the start of the preliminary and detail drawings gave rise to errors in material specifications in design drawings.
This caused the shipyard a significant amount of rework on drawings, resulting in wasted labor costs and lengthening of the shipbuilding cycle time. The completion time for this kind of vessel ranges from 28 to 38 months.
It would be possible to reduce the labor and material costs and completion time substantially with adequate and timely information of material re- quirements from the vendor through VFI.
Management tools and techniques, such as concurrent engineering, computer simulation, and program evaluation review technique PERT could be applied advantageously to improve tugboat shipbuilding de- sign and development productivity. We explained that many acquisition executives believe that a so-called "modified repeat" design has fewer technical risks than a new design. On the other hand, some recent new designs have also experienced unanticipated cost and schedule growth during construction as well as substantial technical problems.

Accordingly, in February, the Society's Executive Committee directed that the revision proceed promptly. In March , President L. Honsinger appointed the Control Committee and in April , the Editor was appointed. The purpose of the book remains essentially the same as that of the prior editions; namely, a textbook "to assist students and others entering the field of shipbuilding towards a knowledge of how merchant ships are designed and constructed and to provide them with a good background for further study. At the outset, the Committee recognized that within a few years the Society's book Principles of Naval Architecture would also be revised and that it contained material which more properly pertained to design and construction rather than theoretical naval architecture. Therefore it recommended, and the Publications Committee as well as the Executive Committee approved, the inclusion in Ship Design and Construction of new chapters on Load Lines, Tonnage, and Launching which would then be deleted from future editions of Principles of Naual Architecture. As a partial trade-off toward page reduction, the Committee eliminated the edition chapter on Submersibles because of its relatively narrow field of interest and the lack of major new developments for commercial operations.
The content of this volume was written based on the decades of experience of the author as well as his years of lecturing in the university. Since the subject lectures were left unpublished for so many years, the decision was made by the author to compile this perfect book and provide all information and knowledge needed by and useful to the students, in a single and comprehensive volume. All of the calculations are duly explained in a way making them understandable to the students at all levels.
This was followed in with the publication of Marine Engineering and in with Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships. This present edition of.
