I'd use it if Boot Hill weren't faster, easier, and better for my needs. Except not the silly fake history. The new and improved defender of RPGs!

[A&8s] Aces & Eights CHARACTER SHEET needed

Regarding the COV virus and its effects: Things are frustrating, and confusing, and scary. People dream up conspiracy theories to help make sense of things. They're not helpful, though, and only serve to make the world more confusing and scarier.

We're not going to have that here. And we swear to God, if anyone comes in here and starts spouting off QAnon bullshit about COVID or literally anything else, you are going to get permabanned so thoroughly that your grandchildren won't be allowed to post here.

Is it more streamlined than 1e? I never got a chance to play 1e because it was so darned complicated and intimidating, even needlessly complicated, imho, despite it being modular in design.

Even the very basics of attributes and skills were needlessly complicated, I feel. Two friends and I did most of character creation with just the PDF of Reloaded a few weeks ago and a printout of the steps. It was pretty easy, as they'd played HackMaster and just had to figure out which skills from the long list were most valuable. It took us less than two hours to do everything but the equipment. HackMaster skills, which you can see free in the HackMaster Basic Free game link in my signature start out low and get harder to learn as a PC progresses.

Skills get a mastery die based on the overall skill level d12 at the start , then add in a learning modifier based on the ability score s involved. The lowest ability score determines the learning modifier applied to the mastery die.

Then you add the lowest ability score for that skill. So, if someone was learning the Riding skill, which uses Dexterity and Wisdom, they would start out with the lower of their Dexterity and Wisdom scores, the mastery die modifier for that ability score and then roll a d12p. Let's say the character has 13 Dexterity and 7 Wisdom. They'd have a mastery die modifier of -2 and start with a 7 for their ability.

If you roll the maximum on the die, you roll again and add 1 less than the number rolled. If you penetrate again, you keep rolling and adding. Each purpose of a skill costs BPs, or building points and now instead of doing math about the cost in a complex calculation, you just pay the amount from the table each time. Each purchase of a skill always increases the skill by at least 1 point, even if the dice are unkind. Another change was consolidating character creation material into one chapter.

That makes creating a character easier, as you aren't hunting for the information. The use of colored bookmark ribbons for each chapter and for those with PDFs, modern PDF formatting, makes finding things much easier than going through the tome used to be.

Other changes are minimal, but just changing the skill system will make the game easier to play. Tremere said:. Betty Registered User Validated User. That gorgeous Swedish Western RPG that was translated last year is supposed to be at a similar level of complexity as well, isn't it? I wonder if it's something about the western genre that appeals to a certain type of designer. Last edited: Oct 17, Betty said:. I also backed Western.

While the authors have had health issues, they are pretty motivated to get the game out. It's also a translation into English of the Swedish game, which is in the 4th edition. So, I imagine that unlike Far West, Western will be finished close to on time. As for complexity, since a western isn't fantasy or science fiction but expected to emulate our world, there might be more of a design goal to provide a more detailed simulucrum.

If that's the case, then authors might feel they need to have more rules because it's supposed to game something we all know. However, some of the complexity can be eliminated by eschewing optional rules. Ignore flinching and don't worry so much about facing and you've eliminated a few detailed pages to worry about. Demoing the base combat system at Origins back in , we found people picked it up pretty quick with a guide.

If you have a computer, there's a full roll 20 set of cover overlays and materials to speed up play; if you lack roll 20 the images are in PNG and thus readily printed or used on a projector or VTT program. However, I can understand that medium complexity is too much for some players. Oh, and if you just want a skirmish game, use the Basic Scrapes rules, aka Showdown. You have speed and accuracy and hit points for your stats.

Weapons are simpler and you don't use all the combat options. Character names, professions and other details are for color. As of last week, all but 70 U. Then the plan is to make the game available for retail sale. I did see a 'preorder' option on Backerkit, but I'm not certain if it works since I backed the game. For some reason complex rulesets seem to get tacked onto a western genre game.

I keep going back to Boot Hill 3rd edition for a reason - it's simple, elegant, and fast. Print the Legend would be a close second though I haven't had a chance to run or play that ruleset.

I always thought BRP was the perfect choice for a straight western game, and hoped to support or at least introduce the idea when I wrote Call of Cthulhu's Down Darker Trails. Aces & Eights: Reloaded, a Wild West role playing game

The game we selected is Aces and Eights. We have played around with it a couple of times in the past— a couple of one shots and character creation sessions. Character creation in Aces and Eights is detailed and proves to be an interesting mix of random with lots of options.

Aces & Eights: Shattered Frontier

The Civil War lasted for ten years and both sides ground to a halt as resources and manpower started to run low for all concerned. The Republic of Texas never had a chance to join the Union and remains neutral in the war. With the Union tied up in a war of attrition with the CSA, the " Indian Territory ", modern-day Oklahoma , was able to form their own government and withdrew from the Union. Mexico still owns much of the modern day Southwestern United States , but does not have the manpower or money to govern it properly. Showdown covers just the basic character creation and combat rules of the game along with a few sample scenarios and a map of the fictional towns of Lazarus and Black Horse.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of this award-winning game's release, we're sending the world back to the Shattered Frontier for more trail dust, lead and action. This NEW version is no simple reprint — but a reloaded 2nd edition chock-full of new rules, tweaks, art and other enhancements. We've designed this Kickstarter to let all western fans belly up to the table and claim a stake in the action.
