In this study, the joint shear strength of low-strength Hungarian sandstones of different grain size and surface roughness was investigated. The direct shear tests along discontinuities were performed under constant normal load. Previously, the direct shear test basic rock mechanic parameters of the investigated intact rocks were determined, such as the UCS value. The goal of the investigation is to determine the effect of the surface properties, such as surface roughness, grain size, and surface quality, on the joint shear strength of Hungarian sandstones. The failure curves derived from the experimental results of direct shear tests under laboratory conditions, and the empirical results according to Barton and Choubey were compared. The correct value can be predicted theoretically and empirically. The most common empirical models developed in the 20th century are based on the Mohr—Coulomb theory, where shear strength is calculated as multiplication of normal stress and tangent of friction angle.

The rock mass rating RMR is a geomechanical classification system for rocks , developed by Z. Bieniawski between and Recently RMR14 [2] has been proposed to improve the RMR performance by incorporating new experiences from tunnel practices. Each of the six parameters is assigned a value corresponding to the characteristics of the rock. These values are derived from field surveys and laboratory tests. The sum of the six parameters is the "RMR value", which lies between 0 and The details for calculating RMR are given by Edumine [4] and provide a series of tables for RMR determination while the latest charts for the same purpose are given in the references and further reading.

The impact of adopting these different forms is discussed at the end of this section. presentation to Figure 5 except that we find: 1) There exists a remarkable similarity among strength curves obtained from tests when rock samples with different origins.

To study the strengthening mechanism and effect underlying the reinforcement of a fractured rock mass with grouting, compressive shear tests were conducted with an RMTB rock mechanics test system. Prefabricated structural surfaces were strengthened with a new inorganic dual-liquid grouting material at five water—cement ratios 0. The effects of these water—cement ratios of the grouting on the deformation, strength, and failure characteristics of the prefabricated structural surface were analyzed. The results show that reinforcement with grouting significantly influenced the bearing capacity of the structural surface.

In continuous model, rock masses are treated as continuum porous media with porosity and permeability and continuum-mechanics formulations can be used to describe flow and transport in media.

Worldwide, landslides occur and cause thousands of casualties and billions in monetary losses annually. The information in this publication provides an introductory primer on understanding basic scientific facts about landslides—the different types of landslides, how they are initiated, and some basic information about how they can begin to be managed as a hazard. Imani, M. The spacing of discontinuities in relation with the foundation width play an important role in the strength of rock mass, because this parameter may give an insight to the continuous or discontinuous behaviours of the rock foundations. In this paper, using distinct element method, the ultimate bearing capacity of a rock foundation with one to three joint sets is determined. Different values of joint spacing are considered and the variation of bearing capacity with the spacing is monitored. The spacing for which the rate of variation of the bearing capacity is negligible is reported as the limit between the continuous and discontinuous behaviours of rock foundations. The results are presented as the spacing ratio SR in which, both the foundation width and joint set spacing are considered.

Metrics details. Knowledge of the strength and elastic modulus of a reservoir rock is important for the optimisation of a particular geothermal resource. Variations in rock mass elastic modulus are qualitatively similar values vary from 1 to 2 GPa up to the elastic modulus of the intact rock, 40 GPa. Our study highlights that macrofractures and joints reduce rock mass strength and should be considered when assessing the rock mass for well stability and rock mass deformation due to stress redistribution in the reservoir. We present a case study to demonstrate how a simple and cost-effective engineering method can be used to provide an indication of the in situ strength and elastic modulus of reservoir rock masses, important for a wide range of modelling and stimulation strategies. We recommend that the effect of macrofractures on rock mass strength and stiffness be validated for incorporation into geomechanical characterisation for geothermal reservoirs worldwide. It has been characterised, for example, in terms of its fracture density, structure, alteration, thermal conductivity, and permeability e.

Gibson, W. The assessment of strength of rock masses is a key element for the analysis of many rock excavations, both open pit and underground. Despite its popularity, this method has some inconsistencies.
