Economic Mobility and the Rise of the Latin American Middle Class

The aim of this article is to compare the intensity and characteristics of short-term income mobility during the s in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru, countries with very dissimilar labor market structures and social protection coverage. This period is particularly relevant since Latin America experienced sustained economic growth together with improvements in labor and social conditions. Results show that the degree of mobility is higher in the region than in certain developed countries. The presence of a large number of income rises in all seven cases is another main finding of the analysis. However, at the same time, a great proportion of households suffered a reduction in their income.

Metrics details. Between and , Latin America has considerably reduced poverty from In this paper, we use synthetic panels to show that, despite progress, the region remains characterized by substantial vulnerability that also affects the rising middle class. Differences between rural and urban areas are substantial. Urban areas, which are now home to most moderate poor and vulnerable, are characterized by higher income mobility, particularly upward mobility. These findings have important implications for the design of effective social safety nets.

Rise of the Latin American Middle Class – or (Statistical) Storm in a Teapot?

After the end of the political and economic cycle that gave rise to the phenomenon that became known as the Brazilian new middle class, in this article we argue that this reading was not limited to verifying the increase in income and consume power of thousands of families, but also framed it within a broader narrative that has hindered the sociological investigation of the phenomenon. Our second objective is to reflect, with the help of data from the Survey on the Middle Class CESOP-UNICAMP , and also from qualitative research previously prepared by the authors, on the possible impacts of these changes on the expectations of individuals and, thus, on their perceptions and attitudes towards the enormous inequalities still present in the country. In the mids, a wide-ranging debate emerged concerning the changes being experienced by Brazilian society, in which different interpretations disputed with each other.

This paper summarizes the findings in this special issue of the Latin American Journal of Economics on entrepreneurship's role in upward social mobility in Latin America, especially for the middle class, often considered the cradle of entrepreneurship. The income-persistent coefficients estimated with pseudo-panel data for Colombia, Ecuador, and Uruguay indicate that entrepreneurship is a channel of intergenerational mobility, while asset persistence estimates for Mexico show that entrepreneurship increases mobility across generations. Although persistence coefficients don't indicate the direction of such mobility, estimates of income differentials between entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs for Ecuador and Mexico support the hypothesis that upward mobility dominates. Keywords: Latin America, entrepreneurship, social mobility, middle class.

At least that is the opinion held by some World Bank officials. But how does this resonate with the still persisting and high inequality in Latin America? In which way does such an assessment relate to the Latin American left turn during the last decades? Furthermore, what are we actually referring to with middle class? And more generally, what ideas of society lurk behind the term? This special issue tries to address some of these topics, attempting to interrogate this analysis of international development organisations as well as discourses and policies predominant during the pink tide in Latin America.

Social mobility is the movement of individuals, families, households, or other categories of people within or between social strata in a society. This movement occurs between layers or tiers in an open system of social stratification. Open stratification systems are those in which at least some value is given to achieved status characteristics in a society. The movement can be in a downward or upward direction. Mobility is most often quantitatively measured in terms of change in economic mobility such as changes in income or wealth. Occupation is another measure used in researching mobility, which usually involves both quantitative and qualitative analysis of data, but other studies may concentrate on social class.

The protests were about more than just the price of transportation. While the price was high, the quality was also poor. Moreover, it was difficult and expensive to get to the university, the public health system was substandard, and cities were unsafe. These protests were somewhat anti-climactic, as they arose just as the rise of Latin American middle class was being greeted by the developed world and documented by the academy and the media.

United Nations. Moderate poverty fell from more than 40 percent in to less than 30 percent in This decline in poverty implies that 50 million Latin Americans escaped poverty over the decade.

This paper examines how the frequent and extended use of credit as a social asset in lower-income families and how the interpretation of financialisation practices has led to a particular discourse on social mobility. Specifically, it addresses the process of credit expansion by department stores and how it relates to lower-income families, i.
