Hello everybody, alongside the pe a tition which is aimed at the Dutch government, we also have started a crowdaction where we all commit to not buying peat-containing soils for a year. Do you want to make the world a better place, but do you sometimes feel that your actions are only a drop in the ocean?
Well, not anymore, because we are introducing crowdacting: taking action knowing that you are one of many. Poppy Bagwell cheered this 4mo ago. Fabio Delle Grazie.

Though the cause of death was determined to be hanging, scholars believe the man was a human sacrifice, rather than an executed criminal, because of the arranged position of his body, and the fact that his eyes and mouth were closed. Additionally, a noose made of plaited animal hide was drawn tight around his neck and trailed down his back. His hair was cropped so short as to be almost entirely hidden by his cap. C 14 radiocarbon dating of Tollund Man indicated that he died in about — BC. The acid in the peat, needed for the preservation of a human body, is caused by a bryophyte named Sphagnum.
Marianne Sommer, Karin Sanders. Bodies in the Bog and the Archaeological Imagination. Chicago: University of Chicago Press.
In the spring of , two brothers cutting peat for their stove near the small Danish village of Tollund uncovered the body of a man buried two metres deep in the bog. The brothers assumed they were looking at a recently buried crime victim and notified the police. The police, aware that well-preserved ancient bodies were occasionally found by peat-diggers, showed up at the site with a couple of curators from the local museum.
I absolutely loved Bodies in the Bog and everything about it, from the thoughtful approach and beautiful writing to the well-contextualized discussions of bog bodies in psychology, poetry, art, museum display, and facial reconstruction. A truly interdisciplinary study clearly based on years of passionate research, it offers a rich and nuanced explanation of what makes these bodies so fascinating, appealing, and troubling. In her study of bog people, Sanders has brought together many voices that are not usually in conversation, presenting a dramatically new set of interlocking perspectives--a new kaleidoscopic pattern. This book is a delight to read, a skillful and ingenious accomplishment, a dexterous weaving of new ideas about a much-debated phenomenon that has long sparked our imaginations. What Sanders has done here makes me rejoice in what a creative mind can do, and in how readers will inevitably come away with all sorts of new understandings. At once gripping, enlightening, and deeply moving, this stunning book offers a mind-boggling trek across space and time, life and death, torment and ecstasy.
