Such devices make up the peripheral equipment of modern digital computer systems. Peripherals are commonly divided into three kinds: input devices, output devices, and storage devices which partake of the characteristics of the first two.
An input device sends information to a computer system for processing , and an output device reproduces or displays the results of that processing. Input devices only allow for input of data to a computer and output devices only receive the output of data from another device. Most devices are only input devices or output devices, as they can only accept data input from a user or output data generated by a computer. For example, as shown in the top half of the image, a keyboard sends electrical signals, which are received as input.
Inputs are the signals or data received by the system and outputs are the signals or data sent from it. For instance, a keyboard or computer mouse is an input device for a computer, while monitors and printers are output devices. Devices for communication between computers, such as modems and network cards , typically perform both input and output operations. The designation of a device as either input or output depends on perspective. Mice and keyboards take physical movements that the human user outputs and convert them into input signals that a computer can understand; the output from these devices is the computer's input. Similarly, printers and monitors take signals that computers output as input, and they convert these signals into a representation that human users can understand.
The devices are usually used for display, projection, or for physical reproduction. Monitors and printers are two of the most commonly-known output devices used with a computer. A computer can still function without an output device. There is no indicator of errors, nor of the need for additional input. It creates a visual display by the use of which users can view processed data.
Input/Output devices are required for users to communicate with the computer. for manual input of characters and displays the information as it is keyed in.
