In a wide array of courses, STSC students learn to think critically about questions such as: Why does modern science look the way it does? How and why do particular technologies and technological systems emerge, expand and become obsolete? How do science and technology sometimes exacerbate race, gender and class inequalities, and how might they be changed to reduce them? How do science and technology shape society, and how does society shape science and technology? The STSC major has an interdisciplinary methodology. It balances a broad foundation of courses within the department with submajors that draw on courses from across the university.
From the discovery of metals up to mapping the human genome, take a quick crash through the development of scientific knowledge. Humankind has always been inquisitive, needing to understand why things behave in a certain way, and trying to link observation with prediction. For example, since prehistoric times we have observed the heavens and tried to make sense of the seasonal changes in the position of the sun, moon and stars.
Unique paths of exploration and discovery Our faculty provides insight into the ongoing global health crisis. One of the world's leading institutions for training the next generation of professional historians of science. The Department of the History of Science is a lively interdisciplinary community of scholars and students who seek to advance understanding of science, technology, and medicine in their historical and social contexts. Our faculty and students come from diverse backgrounds and employ diverse approaches.
History of technology , the development over time of systematic techniques for making and doing things. By the early 20th century the term embraced a growing range of means, processes, and ideas in addition to tools and machines. A highly compressed account of the history of technology such as this one must adopt a rigorous methodological pattern if it is to do justice to the subject without grossly distorting it one way or another. The plan followed in the present article is primarily chronological, tracing the development of technology through phases that succeed each other in time. Obviously, the division between phases is to a large extent arbitrary. One factor in the weighting has been the enormous acceleration of Western technological development in recent centuries; Eastern technology is considered in this article in the main only as it relates to the development of modern technology. Within each chronological phase a standard method has been adopted for surveying the technological experience and innovations.

This programme offers breadth across a wide range of historical and philosophical themes. It also encourages intensive investigation and specialisation: a survey of nearly 3, years of scientific ideas and communities, and an exploration of the inner workings of science's methods and theories. Note on fees: The tuition fees shown are for the year indicated above. Fees for subsequent years may increase or otherwise vary. Further information on fee status, fee increases and the fee schedule can be viewed on the UCL Students website: ucl. A minimum of a second-class Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. This discipline sometimes overlaps metaphysics, ontology and epistemology, viz. Author: Matt Simon Matt Simon. Paul Andersen has created hundreds of science videos that have been viewed millions of times by learners around the world. In addition to this text, he has authored and co-authored nine other textbooks including: Computer Science: A Structured Approach. Getting at least seven hours of quality rest each night is essential for optimal health.
Science encompasses the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment, and technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Oxford Reference provides more than , concise definitions and in-depth, specialist encyclopedic entries on the wide range of subjects within these broad disciplines. Our coverage comprises authoritative, highly accessible information on the very latest terminology, concepts, theories, techniques, people, and organizations relating to all areas of science and technology—from astronomy, engineering, physics, computer science, and mathematics, to life and earth sciences, chemistry, environmental science, biology, and psychology. Written by trusted experts for researchers at every level, entries are complemented by illustrative line drawings, equations, and charts wherever useful.
