I'm ex-pat American living overseas but the resources information and sources are useful and can help with your "small up" journey anywhere in the world.

I brought her book and have really benefited from its ideas. It has lots of links and suggestions for resources that would be useful for her American readers. Liz and I cannot be the only African Americans in this situation, but even after reading all of the other reviews of her book, I did not see any other self-identifiers. The fact that she was brave enough to state her truth as an African American woman is the primary reason her message resonates with me.
Until seeing the PBS interview of Liz, calmly unapologetically explaining what in the world happened to us I felt a personal shame in not escaping the isms.
I successfully navigated the waters of corporate America and academia, but somehow did not escape the net which caught a number of us in as we turned into our 60s. Intuitively, I had begun to reinvent myself in a new field before I saw the PBS interview but "seeing me" through Liz mandated I buy the book even before watching Part 2 of the interview. I had no patience for the next day Prime delivery. I ordered the Kindle and read it cover to cover. The book is a quick, easy, reassuring read.
She provides references when stating facts and reporting on study findings For those of us grounded in research that is reassuring and appreciated. When the author imparts her opinion, she states it as such, and the reader can consider that information along with the other sources which include great snippets of others in this situation. Thank you, Elizabeth White. I thought this book really targets a niche that gets ignored--the single female over I wish there were more books and resources on this topic.
Even the AARP ignores this demographic. Even though this book was useful in areas, I don't know why there is this assumption that women over 55 have a massive group of friends from which they can form a Resilience Circle. I know so many older women who have lost their husbands through divorce or death, or ones who have never married. Their jobs took them far from their families, or in the case of many their families grew away from them.
Those women don't have to fake normal, because no one cares enough about them to notice if they are normal or not. Just wish the book had touched on this more. The day I received this book in the mail I devoured it.
It speaks to me. I could relate in a real way the trauma of a few bad years with little or no support, ashamed and afraid. I felt like a loser. I wish I had had this available to me at that time. It is full of stories, encouragement, and really helpful resources. I think the idea of a Resilience Circle for peer to peer support is a fabulous idea.
